Refill adherence and persistence to lipid-lowering medicines in patients with type 2 diabetes- A nation-wide register-based study

News: Aug 22, 2017

In the present study, the adherence and persistence (continuous treatment) to lipid-lowering medicines was analyzed among 97 595 patients with type 2 diabetes. Included patients initiated their lipid-lowering treatment in 2007-2010 and were followed up to three years. Patient information was collected from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register, the National Diabetes Register, the National Patient Register, the Cause of Death Register, and the Longitudinal Integration Database for Health Insurance and Labour Market Studies. The results were compared between patients with and without previous cardiovascular disease (CVD).

On average, patients had medicines on hand for 71% of their observation period. Patients with previous CVD had a higher adherence compared to patients without previous CVD. The persistence was similar between the patient groups; 73% of the patients were persistent for at least one year and more than half of the patients were still persistent after three years.
