The role of online social networking in the development of attitudes and anxieties concerning food habits, self-esteem and body image, among teens and tweens.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased considerably since the 1980’s. The high incidence of overweight and obesity has critical health consequences. Especially true is this for adolescents. The adolescent period is marked by changes in body composition, diet habits, and psychological issues that make youths at an increased risk of adapting unhealthy lifestyles. Internet and particularly the use of social media has grown in significance for adolescents, yet there is an empirical gap on how food and health messages are communicated between adolescents and the impact social media and online social networking have on the presentation of food habits, self-esteem, and body image. The objective with the research is to investigate how health messages are communicated to and between adolescents in online social networks, and how social media technology can be utilised in health promotion interventions.
