Persistent organic pollutants

In December 2013 heavy contamination with perfluorinated compounds (PFASs) in drinking water from one of the two municipal waterworks in Ronneby was detected. Clean water could immediately be supplied, bot 1/3 of all households had for many years been affected by the contamination, emanating from fire fighting foams from a nearby airfield.

From a scientific standpoint this accident is an almost perfect natural experiment, which will enable epidemiological studies in a population highly exposed to PFOS, PFHxS, and PFOA at dose levels in a general population which are uniquely high. In collaboration with researchers at the unit of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in Lund and other researchers a series of investigations has started, using a full population-based cohort, a large biobank of biological samples from the Ronneby population, a mother-child cohort, and a panel study.
