Applying for a doctoral student position

When and where are doctoral student positions announced?

Doctoral student positions with the University of Gothenburg as employer are announced at the job application portal. The vacancies pertain to full-time doctoral studies, i.e. four years of doctoral studies and the application pertains to a doctoral degree. These doctoral positions are financed mainly through education grants during the first two years and employment as doctoral students during the two last years.

Starting 1 January 2014, applicants admitted to third-cycle studies leading to a PhD or a licentiate degree, shall, following a formal request by the student, be offered a doctoral studentship within one year of full-time studies according to the student’s individual study plan. The studies undertaken prior to the doctoral studentship are to be funded via a doctoral grant.

In order to apply for a third-cycle programme at the Sahlgrenska Academy, please see the job application portal.

In the application you need to include:

  • A personal letter
  • Documentation that verifies your general and special eligibility (for special eligibility please include upper secondary school grade or corresponding grades)
  • CV (Curriculum Vitae) including references

If you are applying for more than one project, you should submit a complete application for each project.

The application should be with the Sahlgrenska Academy at the latest on the date specified on the announcement. Applications that arrive too late will not be considered.

Application process

The applicants to a doctoral student position are assessed concerning entry requirements at the Sahlgrenska Academy Office. Then the application documents will be sent to the main supervisor for the position for selection. It may take up to a month after the deadline before you may be contacted for an interview.

Questions concerning the project

If you have questions concerning the various projects, you should contact the stated main supervisor for the project.

Questions concerning the admission

If you have questions concerning the application, please contact a handling officer.

Employer other than the University of Gothenburg

If you are applying for a doctoral student position financed by your employer (other than the University of Gothenburg), you should submit an individual study plan (including application form) after conferring with your supervisor, along with an established project which your supervisor has applied for and a research plan. The documents shall by this time have been signed by the department's director of studies and the head of the department.
