About Ulf Lerner

Professor of Oral Cell Biology at Umeå University since 1991 (currently 50%) and guest professor at Sahlgrenska Academy since 2010 (50%). Priniciple investigator for a group of 8 people in Umeå and 2 people at Sahlgrenska Academy for cell- and molecular studies on differentiation and function of bone forming osteoblasts and bone resorbing osteoclasts.

Main Research Topic

Main research areas are regulation of bone resorption and bone formation by inflammatory processes and by steroid hormones, including effects on the bone cells by pro- and antiinflammatory osteotropic cytokines, kinins, glucocorticoids and retinoids. The studies involve also molecular mechanisms by which these signalling molecules exert their effects intracellularly. A third area is the effect by cysteine proteinase inhibitors on osteoclast differentiation and function.
