About Louise Grahnemo

In 2012, Louise joined CBAR (Centre for Bone and Arthritis Research) as a postdoc to study osteoporosis in an experimental model of arthritis. Louise is now associate professor in molecular medicine and she focuses on the relationship between bone and adipose tissue.

Main Research Topic

Louise is interested in the relationship between bone and fat, with a special focus on marrow adipose tissue (MAT). Although marrow adipose tissue constitutes approximately 70% of the bone marrow in adult humans, its function is unclear. However, there seems to be an inverse relationship between bone mass and MAT, which may be due to bone building osteoblasts and adipocytes competitively differentiating from the same stem cell and possibly because adipocytes secrete factors that reduce bone mass. Therefore, increased knowledge about the crosstalk between bone and fat may potentially identify new targets for osteoporosis treatment.
