About Marie Lagerquist

In 2005 Marie started her position as a research assistant, financed by the Swedish research council, and started her studies on the interaction between the immune system and bone. Today she is a researcher at the Institution of Medicine and 2012 she was assigned Ragnar Söderberg Fellow in Medicine.

Main Research Topic

Marie is interested in estrogen and how this hormone exerts its positive effects on bone turnover. Inflammation is associated with pathological bone loss. Thus, the immune system is involved in bone regulation and the overall aim of her research is to characterize the role and mechanism of action of estrogen in inflammation-mediated bone loss seen both in osteoporosis and in rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, knowledge about the molecular mechanism behind estrogenic effects on bone may facilitate the development of bone-specific estrogenic treatment strategies which avoid the adverse effects.
