School of Public Health

Department of Public Health and Community MedicineWelcome to the School of Public Health at the Institute of Medicine. We conduct research and education in general medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, health metrics, epidemiology and social medicine.

A healthy future

Our vision is to build a healthy future. We strive to achieve excellence in our three core functions: research, education and community impact. We aim to improve public health through innovative research and by training health professionals from diverse backgrounds, as well as future leaders. We also translate research into policy and serve communities with knowledge locally, nationally and internationally.

From individuals to populations

Our research covers the hole life span. Studies of sound environment at preschools is an example that targets the youngest. Occupational medicine and insurance medicine focus on health in the working age population. Lifestyle risk factors are connected to a number of diseases. One of our strongest research areas is nutritional epidemiology. We also study problems related to alcohol consumption, environment, gender, social security and work environment. Other research areas include pharmacoepidemiology, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and mental health.

Interdisciplinary research

Our research combines epidemiology with qualitative methods and laboratory research. We have several interdisciplinary research programmes in insurance medicine, child obesity and women’s health. The programmes engage researchers from a range of disciplines.
