Medical Program

The Section for Epidemiology and Social Medicine is involved in the medical programme through its responsibility for the introduction week of the semester 1 and in the course of Social Medicine in semester 9. 

Introduction course

The course includes one week and is a guide for future training. The course includes:

  • The program aims and objectives
  • What was it like attending the program?
  • Early professional contact and research
  • Medical profession as it may turn out in various specialties
  • Ethics
  • Gender and Public Health 

Social Medicine

The course in Social Medicine aims to provide students with basic knowledge and concepts on how to measure and describe the health status of populations and the factors influencing health status at the individual and population levels. Particular emphasis placed on lifestyle factors and the importance of social interaction. Students are given basic knowledge about methods of prevention, health economics, evaluation methods and the care center laws and regulations.

In order to foster better collaboration on individuals, students shall obtain knowledge of the social security system, medical facilities and the obligations to cooperate with other care providers and agencies, as well as obtain some skill to handle such communications either through direct contact and through certification and referrals.

The Social Medicine topic is part of the course in Community Medicine, which is administered twice per semester (due to a split semester) during semester 9 in medical school. The course is conducted over nine weeks. Other topics within Community Medicine are; general medicine, geriatrics, environmental and occupational medicine, rehabilitation medicine and forensic medicine.
