Om Muhammad Nawaz

 Dr. Nawaz received his first degree in 2006 as Bachelors of Science (BSc) in Chemistry and Biology. Followed by Master's degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in 2009 with specialization in genetics, nucleic acids metabolism, protein chemistry and DNA recombinant biotechnology.

In 2011, he completed M.Phil's thesis on inherited / congenital diseases with a particular focus on intellectual disability and cognition (neurological disorders).

He received his PhD degree from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil (2013-2017) where he investigated the role of microRNAs in malignant progression of brain tumors (gliomas), with an aim to identify potential therapeutic targets and non-invasive biomarkers. He also developed a project to apply liposomes for transporting oligonucleotides (anti-miRs and antagonists: as silencing RNAs) to glioma cells. During his PhD, he joined the University of Gothenburg, Sweden as a one-year PhD exchange in the lab of Hadi Valadi, and then continued as a postdoc.

Currently Dr. Nawaz is investigating transport of RNA molecules between cells via extracellular vesicles (exosomes), and applying exosomes as vehicles of RNA drugs, oligonucleotide therapies, and stem cell based therapies.

 


Social: In addition to doing science, he has been involved in idea generations, conceived the idea for Biochemistry society at his previous University where he was the founder of Biochemists Association QAU, Islamabad (BAQI) and has served several volunteer activities for the community, namely general secretary of blood donor society (he is also a regular blood donor), and has been participating with teams to help people affected by natural disasters e.g earth quakes and floods. He has also participated in fundraising for various causes.
